The Rio Muerto Sites

Rio Muerto complex (sites M43, M48, M70) the most recently discovered of the Moquegua Tiwanaku sites, was first mapped by the MAS team in 1994. We further investigated the site with systematic surface collections and test excavations in 1998. The 1998 work focused on the domestic village sectors of the site group, and found distinct settlement areas of "Omo style" and "Chen Chen style" Tiwanaku colonies, dating to the 8th century AD. In 2006, we began the Rio Muerto Archaeological Project with Peruvian archaeologist Patricia Palacios. The 2006 and 2007 seasons are focusing on comparative mortuary excavation in several of the site group's dozen Tiwanaku cemeteries.
